Bus Escapades - 1950s Yallourn to Trafalgar School Bus

Bus Escapades En Route to Trafalgar – 1950s (circa 1990)
A young ‘gentleman’ called John, whose surname shall remain a secret, was walking with his sister to catch a school bus when he and his sister had a disagreement. It must have been quite a disagreement because his sister ‘hitched’ him to the overhead bridge by his braces (braces were a common method of keeping ones trousers up in the 1950 era).
When he disentangled himself, he found he had missed the school bus so went home and told mum what had happened. She said “walk to school”. So, off he went walking along the road… more

Centre Hall

Centre Hall, on the opposite side of the foyer to Kernot Hall, was previously Yallourn's first Fire Station until 1948. A facelift later, it became Centre Hall. In its life, it also was used as an air-raid precautions control centre during the 1935-1945 War. The building later became used primarily as a meeting place. Also hired by the local Orchestral Society, for sittings of the local Court of Petty Sessions and occasionally for small wedding receptions.

Childhood Reflections - Graham Beanland - 10 Years in Yallourn from 1932 to 1942

CHILDHOOD REFLECTIONS – 10 Years in YALLOURN from 1932 to 1942

Our move to Yallourn in 1932, soon after I was born, followed dad’s appointment as Principal of Yallourn Tech. when the school consisted of three small timber cottages in Narracan Avenue and had only three other full time teaching staff. The family lived initially in Ridgeway West, moving in 1934 to live at 29 Latrobe Avenue on the corner of Reservoir Road. My only memory of Ridgeway West was time spent in a pale blue fish-shaped rocking horse on the back veranda. Another early recollection of life in Yallourn was the… more

Colin Wiggins - Yallourn Football Club (YFC) and Yallourn Cricket Club (YCC)

VALE COLIN ALEC WIGGINS
15/5/1943 - 9/7/2016

It is with sorrow that I inform of the passing of my life-long friend Colin Wiggins. Colin was born in Yallourn and was educated at the Yallourn State and Technical schools. His parents were old Yallourn identities and resided in Latrobe Avenue near the Technical school. Col was in my grade class for all of the years we attended school. We were both very competitive and strived to be both the best in school and in sport.

Col played senior football for Yallourn and was a first class player in cricket often opening the… more

Does anybody know what happened to George Plavins?

One funny note on the soccer. In about 1957, Colin Ellis’s dad came up to Yallourn Primary School one assembly and told us there would be a pie night, free soft drink and cartoons at the Soccer Club. It was the most exciting thing I’d ever heard, so I joined the Soccer Club and played for a couple of seasons.

The Yallourn Football Club started pre-season training but they had no juniors, they were all playing soccer, so they put on a pie night! I couldn't believe my luck! The pies were great!

PS: Does anybody know what happened to George Plavins? He was a great soccer player… more

Does anyone remember the story about a ritual where men danced naked near the Power Station?

A story that hit the headlines in the paper in the early 60's - a guy in the West Camp died in his unit. When it was being cleaned up, they found a cat of nine tails and other "implements" along with film and tape recordings. On the film there was evidence of a group of men that danced naked around a fire in the hills accross the road from the Power Staion, heading up to Yallourn North. The nasty part is there was a dead body involved - it was an elderly lady who was the housekeeper for the Catholic Parish Priest in Trafalgar. She was buried in the Traf cemetery, but the body was… more

Dr James Moore Andrew

Dr James Moore Andrew practised in the Yallourn area from 1925 until he died on November 2, 1972.

Doctor Andrew was born in 1899 in Kyneton and came to the area on New Years Eve in 1925, just days after his marriage. He was only 2 years out of medical School. He spent 45 years attending the people of Yallourn and Brown Coal Mine, bringing many of them into the world. He was on call 24 hours every day. One time driving his T-Model Ford to Brown Coal Mine on a very poor road, he swerved to avoid a drunken cyclist and crashed into the bush. He
severed several tendons in his… more
