Football in Gippsland in those times was very strong and played a big part in the local communities. The senior team at YHS consisted mainly of Form 5 & 6 students and many of them played in their respective town’s senior teams. As YHS was the only high school in the area, students travelled from Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Trafalgar and all surrounding areas. I remember names like the Archbold brothers from Traralgon, one going on to play with Carlton. Also John Hutchinson from Yallourn who played with Fitzroy and Frank Good from Moe who played with Nth Melbourne.

We played games against other schools from Warragul, Sale and Yallourn Tech.

Sports equipment was fairly basic at the school, especially for the junior teams. Our school uniform was a navy top you owned or could borrow with a stripe added. Boots were footy boots if lucky, otherwise you banged a few stops into your normal boots. Shorts and socks were whatever you had.

We played our home matches on the sports area (couldn’t really call it an oval) at the school and I think our coach might have been Wally Cass or possibly Shorty Farrelly?

I have tried to place names to faces in the photo shown and I wonder if anybody from those years could name each person in the photo
