Kenn commenced YHS in 1949 and matriculated in 1952. He played first grade cricket for St John's and ANA and Soccer for Yallourn United. He moved on to Primary Teaching, returned briefly to Yallourn from 1957-1960 when he married and moved to Morwell. During these years, he played basketball at the Yallourn Drill Hall and Youth Club, and cricket for Morwell. During the years 1950-52, Kenn worked on Saturday mornings at the menswear shop with Col Troake and later with Ian Barnett..and also during Christmas holidays.
