Stanley James was the youngest son of Etta and Tom Green and his family resided at 47 Narracan Avenue, Yallourn, next door to the Scholes family. Stan attended Yallourn Technical School and I went to Yallourn High School. Loving sport, he was involved in football, soccer and athletics. The girls loved going up to the top fence of the high school to watch the boys go past from the Tech who were heading to sports.

My brother Bubby came home with picture tickets one afternoon and after my mother declined them he offered them to me. I was horrified at the thought of asking someone to the pictures so Bubby took it upon himself to organise a date for me and ran out the door with an idea. On return declared that Stan Green was to take me. This was to be the start of our relationship.

Stan began his National Service in the Army whilst in Yallourn. A letter he wrote to me on the 28th March 1955 includes a note about a meal of eggs on toast and apple fritters with ice-cream and how expensive it was at 6 shillings and sixpence at a cafe in Dandenong on his way back to Puckapunyal after leave.

Stan was 21 and I was 19 years old when we married at St. Johns Church of England in Yallourn on the 26th of May 1956. Our four children, Susan, Raymond, David and Joanne were all born in the Yallourn Hospital.

Stan was employed at the SEC and I worked in the Yallourn General Store owned by the SEC and then moved over to Hinkleys, a green grocer that also sold various food items, lollies and cigarettes. I recall the many times children used to visit the store and buy a pennys worth bag of biscuits.

Both Stan and I loved Yallourn and the memories of friends and events as it was truly a great community. We had a wonderful full life together with our family living in Yallourn, Yallourn North, Morwell and the Snowy Mountains. After returning to Morwell and our children growing up, moving out of home and having children of their own, Stan and I moved to Paynesville. After the sad passing of Stan on the 6th December 2005, I moved back to Morwell into a lovely unit at the Rose Garden Village so I could be closer to my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
