Notes

Huge fuschia bushes and Joan loved to pop the flowers. Uncle Tom had a bench behind the shed out back. The bench was covered with hundreds of slaters and I remember playing with them. I played with Dennis Driscoll next door. I remember Auntie Audrey (Audrey Wiggins - later McAuliffe) often played with me in the garden. She was about 17 at the time. One night I woke up crying. Mum & dad were out and Auntie Mona put me in front of the kitchen fire to "watch the fairies". It did the trick. I remember feeling much better and every time I san an open fire with flames, I think of the fairies. Mum couldn't get used to the rush to the pub after work for the men to get ina few drinks before 6 o'clock closing. This didn't happen in Scotland. So she soon put a stop to dad doing it. We acquired a Housing Commission house in Moe. They had just quickly built houses to accommodate all the migrant SEC workers. This was the beginning of Moe becoming populated with the SEC employees.
While I worked in the Municipal Office (my first "out-of-typing-pool" appointment), I came across a letter from my Uncle Tom to the SEC requesting that a sleepout be built in his garden for his brother and family (us) coming from Scotland. I just wish photocopiers were around then and I would have copied it for posterity. I wonder where all those files went? They were very interesting to read through as they were from tenants needing maintenance work carried out on their house.
