Notes

The Huberts arrived in Yallourn in the middle of winter after a 6-month trip to Netherlands where Jo Huberts decided her then 5 children needed the more open spaces back in Australia. John remembers the first few cold foggy nights and the sound of trains hauling coal in the open cut and thinking that this wasn't Australia (they had previously lived in Ballarat). Jo was also very upset after hanging out the washing and finding it all covered in coal dust only to have the same thing happen again after washing them again! Fortunately, a neighbour suggested to leave the washing out until dry and then just shake off the dust!

Fond memories of spending every day during summer at the swimming pool, participating in the swimming club and being amazed by Otto Fuch (later Ford) who was the pool manager and swimming coach. John remembers one incident where some hoons had thrown beer bottles over the fence and smashed them on the 3m diving board, leaving the bottom of the pool covered in broken glass. Otto would dive for a full 3 minutes at a time picking up the glass.
