As an SEC Cadet Engineer, I had a year in Yallourn. I started work at Yallourn Power Station in December 1963, and after 6 months, the Workshops for the rest of the time. I lived at the Staff Mess, which was in the area now a vacant carpark just outside the old Main Gate. In February 1964, I joined the CMF 38 Field Squadron, and was an Asst Scout Leader at 1st Yallourn Group. We had Cubs-Scouts Going-Up Ceremonies using a rope bridge set up across an old WW2 anti-aircraft pit.
I was roped in to the Latrobe Light Opera Society (now the Latrobe Theatre Company) for the Naughty Marietta season.
Moved back to Melbourne for 1965 and half of 1966, to return to the Valley where I have lived since (apart from two secondments outside - the SEC was a marvellous employer that gave excellent development opportunities). I was fortunate in that the time back in Melbourne coincided with an officer training program that had 35 of us become Lieutenants in the Engineers, so I returned to 38 Fed Sqn in 1966 ( I resigned in 1970). I worked at several Valley powergen locations until taking a VDP at end 1991 and joining Monash University, retiring in 2010 but continuing with FedUni part time.
