Basketball Netball Memories

My memory of basketball in Yallourn. This was around mid 1940s when we first had the Youth Club basketball teams. The games were played on asphalt courts, which were where the Fire Station and Bus terminal were later built. Our next venue was on the ovals area, right up at the back of the tennis courts, over the road from the swimming pool. There were no facilities, like toilets, change rooms, shelters – oh so primitive in comparison with today’s facilities - still we all enjoyed our sport. We played teams from Brown Coal Mine – now Yallourn North, Moe, 2 teams from Yallourn –whites… more

Briquette Factory Explosion 1953 by Kevin Brogan

Briquette Factory Explosion

1953 was my first year at School. The most vivid memory I of have of that year (apart from the vague recollections of my first year at St Therese’s) was the walk home from school on Friday 27th of March 1953 (I needed the help of the Internet to find the date – ironic as in 1953 I was using a slate and slate pencil for school work).

I was trudging along my usual route home from school (we lived in Boola Crescent, so my standard route home was along Office Place, across the Picture Theatre concourse, over past the Presbyterian Church Tennis Courts,… more

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Virtual Yallourn project of researching and writing stories about the Yallourn Football Club (1945-65) commenced in August 2012. The project of some 33 stories is now completed and the stories have been posted/filed on the Virtual Yallourn website.

The project attempted to document the history of the YFC following WWII and place on record some of the players, officials, match results and significant events of that remarkable era in Gippsland football. The project has also… more

Lois Gust - Sporting Memories of Yallourn - Swimming, Hockey, Athletics and more....

This is a story that has been waiting to be written. It is the story of one of Yallourn and Gippsland’s best-ever swimmers ~ Lois Gust. It is hoped that the story will not only shed some light on the wonderful contribution that Lois and her family made to Yallourn but perhaps the story may also give further insight into the people and times of the Yallourn swimming, athletic and hockey clubs.

THE 1948 PREMIERSHIP

PART: I ‘THE COACH ~ TED HILL'

This story for Virtual Yallourn is more about the man Ted Hill than the Yallourn Football Club. Ted was the last premiership coach of Yallourn and is one of the most successful and intriguing football coaches in Australian country football in that era.

Ted was born in about 1918. The first documentation that indicated Ted was a footballer of some ability can be found in 1935. At only 16 years of age, Ted played with Coburg (affiliated with the VFA). It seems he was a centre half back and caught the eye of onlookers.… more

YALLOURN FOOTBALLERS WHO PLAYED VFL~ 1945-65

Yallourn Football Club was formed in 1922 and there is a possibility that some Yallourn footballers may have played VFL without the early club records actually acknowledging that fact.

The history of many early country footballers is elusive and open to conjecture. Anecdotal evidence can be unreliable and often early written records were incomplete, inaccurate or simply non-existent. In earlier times the coverage of country recruiting lacked the resources and in-depth details that are apparent in today’s intensive media scrutiny… more

Yallourn Football Club YFC - 1945-1965 - Mike, Geoff & Jack Collins

SEASON 1965 …. MIKE, GEOFF & JACK COLLINS

PART: I SEASON 1965

Although Yallourn FC finished well outside the Final Four in 1965, the club had been successful in bolstering the list and building upon the foundations laid by Garry Butler and John Hutchinson. Fostering the development of young players is the best recipe for success in country football and Yallourn FC was definitely on the right track in 1963 and 1964.

Despite a long list of injuries in 1965 the team had shown, at times, real potential to take the club forward in LVFL football. The crop of… more
