Does anyone know the whereabouts of Richard Kurek or his sister, Zofia? They arrived in Yallourn from Europe post war and both attended Yallourn High School - commencing around 1958.

My memory of basketball in Yallourn. This was around mid 1940s when we first had the Youth Club basketball teams. The games were played on asphalt courts, which were where the Fire Station and Bus terminal were later built. Our next venue was on the ovals area, right up at the back of the tennis courts, over the road from the swimming pool. There were no facilities, like toilets, change rooms, shelters – oh so primitive in comparison with today’s facilities - still we all enjoyed our sport. 1953 was my first year at School. The most vivid memory I of have of that year (apart from the vague recollections of my first year at St Therese’s) was the walk home from school on Friday 27th of March 1953 (I needed the help of the Internet to find the date – ironic as in 1953 I was using a slate and slate pencil for school work).

This story for Virtual Yallourn is more about the man Ted Hill than the Yallourn Football Club. Ted was the last premiership coach of Yallourn and is one of the most successful and intriguing football coaches in Australian country football in that era.

Yallourn Football Club was formed in 1922 and there is a possibility that some Yallourn footballers may have played VFL without the early club records actually acknowledging that fact.

Although Yallourn FC finished well outside the Final Four in 1965, the club had been successful in bolstering the list and building upon the foundations laid by Garry Butler and John Hutchinson. Fostering the development of young players is the best recipe for success in country football and Yallourn FC was definitely on the right track in 1963 and 1964.
