YALLOURN FOOTBALL CLUB 1945-65

NEVILLE LINNEY & OTHER NOTABLE YFC GOAL KICKERS

Yallourn Football Club full forward Neville Linney won the ‘The Advertiser Shield’ for the leading goal kicker in the Latrobe Valley Football League in 1963.

In all the years that Yallourn was affiliated with the LVFL, Neville was the only player to top the list. It was a notable achievement and should be placed on record.

Neville Linney (born in 1933) was somewhat of a ‘boy wonder’ in VFL football. He was recruited from Malvern Grammar to St Kilda. In his first season of… more

Memories of a Junior Postie at Yallourn Post Office 1960s

Memories of a Junior Postie in Yallourn in mid-1960s…Neil Crawley (great grandson of Yallourn’s Dad/Pop Brewer)

I finished Grade 4 at Yallourn Primary (although the first year was held at the High School in a room near Strzelecki Road) and then shifted to Morwell, but came back a few years later and worked at Yallourn Post Office in my first ever job, soon after decimal currency came in.

My Junior Postal Officer (JPO) duties included telegrams, collecting mail from roadside boxes, collecting money from public telephones, riding a bike to Hernes Oak to either carry out house… more

First Born at Yallourn Hospital - Geraldine Sutton - 1929

I'm 85 on the 19th February and was the first child born in the new Yallourn Hospital. Matron Madge Allen was my God Mother.
I believe Mrs Thorpe gave birth to Gloria that same day, but I got there first in the wee small hours...Geraldine Sutton

Yallourn Hockey Club

There was a change of uniform in approx. 1970. The Club decided to upgrade and modernize the uniform (as can be seen in old photos - a mixture of navy & white socks and cute rick rack edging on the pleated dress). Burnt orange socks were decided - this allowed players to distinguish their team members quickly whilst on the move "dribbling" the ball. It worked - they won their first Premiership shortly after!!....Veronica Lacey

Jim Dorgan (born 1930) was appointed as the coach of Yallourn Football Club in 1960. He took over the role from Vic Lawrence (ex-North Melbourne) who had coached the Blues in 1958-59.

Jim Dorgan’s senior career commenced with Williamstown FC in the VFA. In 1949 Jim was recruited to the Melbourne Football Club and he made his debut,
as a teenager, for the Demons in Round: 6 against St Kilda.

Yallourn Briquette Factory

In conjunction with the power station, the open cut mine also fed a briquette factory operated by the SECV. The first stage of the factory came into operation in November 1924 with a capacity of about 400 tons per day, with a major extension approved in 1927 and completed early in 1931 increasing the capacity to 1200 tons per day. Using German technology, the factory also generated electricity, with a maximum output of approximately 10 MW it produced 220 MWhr daily, of which about 50 MWhr was used in the factory and 170 MWhr was fed into the state grid. The plant closed in 1970, after the… more
