Memories
Mum (Honor Crane) had a German French background. Her maiden name was Gloz. ( I think pronounced in German as “Glotz”)

The maternal side of the Gloz line was Dentry and before that St Omer and Omer. Mum’s name was Honor Evelyn St Omer Gloz -born in Walhalla. Her mother was Ethel St Omer Dentry who married Johannes Gloz (junior)

Her grandfather Johannes Heinrich and his step brother Herman built Windsor House – the family home in Walhalla. The family disputes some of the written history about the Gloz family and the building of Windsor House – including the role of Herman. My cousin John Gloz has more information about the disputed material!

One of my cousins, Melva Moroney has traced the St Omer/Dentry line back to the 5th Century and had her research verified by 2 geneologist, although my wife Kim, who is into genealogy, believes some of the material needs further checking. Originally, Melva received the information about the family line from her grandmother Edith (Edie) who derived some of her information from notes in family bibles.

Melva has given me an abbreviated family history, but she has a much more expansive record and cupboards full of family memorabilia and has arranged for her son to take over when she is no longer with us.

Early ancestors included a sibling of Godfrey De Bouillon who led the first Crusade into Jerusalem and was named First King of Jerusalem and Godfrey of St Omer who was responsible for the building of Notre Dame Cathedral and St Bertin in Saint-Omer France. We have Knight’s Templars in our family line. Not sure if it was Godfrey De Bouillon or Godfrey of Saint Omer or both. There were several church builders in the family line.

My children are: Skye Bellamy Crane. 21/7/1985 to 11/9/1985.

Jordan Francis Keith Crane. Born: 14/8/1987.

Timothy John Crane. Born: 1/7/1989. Married to Anne-Marie O’Brien.

Nicholas St Omer. Born: 20/4/1991.

My father’s name was Henry Keith Crane. Born 1900. Died 1953. His brothers included: Claude, Jack, Howard, Ken (Garry and Gail’s father) and 2 brothers who died in infancy.

Dad’s marriage to mum was his second marriage. His first wife was Phylis.

Nana Crane was Elsie Brittingham. I have been told that after Grandfather Crane’s death, my father (the eldest son) came to the Yallourn region and brought one brother at a time as he found work for them. Nana Crane ran a boarding house in Yallourn North and may have also run a boarding house in their family residence in Asling Street, Brighton. I understand that Grandfather Crane was an interior decorator, but his death precipitated the family’s move to Yallourn and Yallourn North.

Mum’s siblings were Jack and Merle.

Jack married Pearl Mills who is still living. Their children were Marilyn and John.

Merle married Frank Paynter whose first wife had passed away. Frank had a son Alan from his first marriage and a daughter Marg from his marriage to Merle.

My wife Kim’s parents were Noel Bellamy and Jeanette Costelloe who were married in St Kilda in 1954.

Besides the 2 Godfreys, famous members of the family line include:

Bill Woodfull – Australia Captain of The bodyline Series who married into the Brittinghams;

Bill Brittingham – Essendon’s Team of The Century;

Of course you know Garry Crane – Carlton’s Team of the Century;

Merv Simpson – From the St Omer/Dentry line who was a trumpeter with The Victorian Symphony Orchestra; member of the Victorian Trumpet Trio; Musical Director of the Footscray Yarraville Band which won a World Brass Band Competition; Merv taught many trumpeters including members of the Daly Wilson Big Band and the award to The Australian Young Trumpeter of the Year is named after Merv; and he was an outstanding District Cricketer.

Melva Moroney’s husband John played football for East Sandringham and his brother Les played for Moorabbin and won a JJ Liston medal.

Julian Paynter is Alan Paynter and wife Jane’s son (from Moe). He represented Australia in the 1996 Olympics having won several National Championships and The 1992 City to Surf in Sydney. He was runner-up in a later edition of the race.

Kim’s Grandfather Jack Bellamy had a family tree which dated back to the English Royal Family, but after he separated from his first wife Paddy, the document went missing. Kim is trying to re-piece it back together or to find the original!

Paddy was a noted pioneer and business woman in Alice Springs and was documented as the first women to drive solo from Adelaide to Alice Springs carrying supplies for her dress shop in Alice Springs. She also wrote for an early women’s magazine – I think with dress making patterns.

Jack and Paddy’s son John Noel Gordon Bellamy (Noel) born in Drouin 3rd June 1929 - was a highly decorated pilot – winning an Airforce Cross during his time with the RAAF and an Order of Australia Medal for his services to civil aviation. He was Captain of one of the Queen’s planes during her 1954 Royal Tour to Australia and was the pilot for Robert Menzies in 1957 and. There is extensive information about Noel on the internet!

With regard to the Save Yallourn Committee. The final president may have been Joe Dell - father of Colin who played for Footscray and was playing in the infamous Neil Sachse broken neck match.
