The Yallourn Red Cross provided ancillary emergency medical care during the 1960s. It was formed initially in1962 at Hernes Oak Progress Hall and in 1963, a lock-up storeroom at the Yallourn Railway Station was made available for the Society.

Red Cross first-aid teams under Superintendent Mrs R Vivian and Sister J Conquest were sent to the 1965 bushfire centres at Heyfield and Bruthen. Does Anyone know anything about this Yallourn Signage up near the reservoir somewhere? What was it for? It was obviously meant to be seen from the air. Why was it there? When was it put in? I had heard a rumor it was installed during the war to try and confuse potential bomb droppers but I'm not sure how much truth there is in this.

Yallourn Story Animation

I made this film back in 2006 as part of a show down in the Latrobe Valley as part of the commonwealth games cultural festival. To make the film I interviewed a number of YOGA members and other former residents of the town (whom, I'm sure, some of you will recognise) and then worked with the kids at the Yallourn North Primary school to animate their stories.

Yallourn Swimming Club by Arthur Brogan (circa 1991) and footnote by Kevin Brogan (2015)

The Club was established down on the Latrobe River in 1930. It was located on the road to the Town Water Supply Pump House. The site is still accessible today from the same road which starts opposite Yallourn W Power Station, however it has changed a lot since the early swimming days.
In the early days swimmers had to walk or ride bikes from the town down an old bike track towards the Power Station, turn off before reaching the West Camp and then on past Horrie Devine’s House/ Carrier Business and down the Pump House road.
