First and last to live at the Nursery. No neighbours - just bush. 5 acres of Nursery with plants for the township of Yallourn. Stables for draught horses - they pulled the drays. These were used before utilities. Further away was the briquette factory and open cut, which could be walked around (at first); also the power station. I used to enjoy seeing the steam, then hearing the whistle from the power station.

Living four doors away from Yallourn Tech School, we could sleep longer! Chooks in back yard (well fertilized lemon tree enclosed). Generally harmonious neighbourhood. Ability to cycle anywhere without concern.

The door handles were so high that the kids couldn't open the doors till well after they started school! Memories of playing at one of the many parks within walking distance of our house (5?) without the parents worrying where we were. Buying bags of lollies at the Heather Grove shop for 5 cents. Brownies and Guides. Mum chopping up a red-belly black snake with a spade when all the local kids were playing in the yard and putting it in a container for dad to check it was dead when he came home from work. Going to play in the bush or at the clay hills.

David Apps - approx 1960 - on the slopes of Mt Erica sitting in an ex-stock car with a 38 Ford V8 motor cobbled to a truck gearbox. It was used for a bit of sport on the forest tracks in the area. This was probably the last time it was driven as the engine had seized coming back down the track, the car had spun three times when the back wheels locked and that is a look of relief on the driver's face since, most surprisingly, the car stayed on the road.
