In May 1926 Jim started work, as a Survey Assistant, in Yallourn. At this time Single Staff accommodation was provided in four man tents at the Western Camp with meals provided in the Staff Mess, which was still in operation in 1948. My only memory is of a Robin Redbreast sitting on the clothesline and my father in pyjamas and dressing gown near the line. Before I was born, my parents lived in Narracan Avenue next door to Dinty and Ruth Williams

Very happy childhood. Dad did the garden, grew all our vegetables. There were great grounds to play in, trees to climb! Walls to hit a ball against and room to hit a tennis ball in the drive; also one could play in the street as there were very few cars. Yallourn was a great place. Great home to be a child - corner block so garden front and sides - no back garden, trees to climb, drive to play ball. Air-raid shelter inside so blocked back hall during the war.

The block was very steep. The garage was at road level but the house was set down from the road in the middle of the block. Because of where the house was, I walked to school every day along a rocky dirt path which came out at the Heather Grove little shop. We had moved from 66 Eastern Ave, East Newborough. Happy to live in a beautiful town, which had a cinema, shops, swimming pool and sports ovals. I was a member of GFS - Anglican Church and a "Keen Teen" marching girl - coached by Mr Webster. Very happy time - after living in a "migrant town" with no facilities. My mother was finally happy living here. Immediate Neighbours: 10 - McIntosh; 6 - Burgoyne Nearby Neighbours: Sambell; Norden; Goss; Horscroft; Field; Lakeman

Very happy. It was above street level and overlooked the town below and right across to the Srzelecki Ranges where there were fern gullies and then led down to the sea. I liked the fact that staff members and even lowly paid employees could live next to each other. This didn't always appeal to some wives (staff)! We were fortunate to be able to go to the snow in winter and the sea - but there was petrol rationing and friends shared the joy. Mr Servellie, Manager of the Briquette Works, whose wife and family were evacuated, took us for drives in the hills etc.

Great plum trees - apricots were only good for the first couple of years. After we'd lived there for about 2 years, we had the phone put on - that was very exciting. We had a very good view of Hazelwood Power Station - when we arrived there were one and a half chimneys. It took about a year for each subsequent chimney to 'grow'. It was very exciting watching the fire that burnt out one of the conveyor systems, can't remember the year. The TV antenna was very tall - I was ony ever game enough to climb about half way up it.

My dad had a large vegie patch. He built a solid concrete walled garage with a large service pit. He also constructed a hydraulic (water) clothes line that went up and down by turning tap off/on. Our briquette heater had a water coil through it to produce hot water. I had a good time playing footy and cricket in Tanjil Place with all the kids. We had our own bush to play in and construct tree houses in.
