As an SEC Cadet Engineer, I had a year in Yallourn. I started work at Yallourn Power Station in December 1963, and after 6 months, the Workshops for the rest of the time. I lived at the Staff Mess, which was in the area now a vacant carpark just outside the old Main Gate. In February 1964, I joined the CMF 38 Field Squadron, and was an Asst Scout Leader at 1st Yallourn Group. We had Cubs-Scouts Going-Up Ceremonies using a rope bridge set up across an old WW2 anti-aircraft pit.

Some sad news for people of Yallourn…..Doug Williams passed away on Monday, 18 August 2014 at the age of 93. Doug played with Yallourn FC…then Carlton and…. then coached in Tasmania and then played with Morwell FC before retiring from football. Carlton FC have a tribute planned and will be wearing black arm bands against Port Adelaide in memory/honour of Doug. Doug’s story is on our Virtual Yallourn website - http://www.virtualyallourn.com/node/25923 - or search "football".

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Richard Kurek or his sister, Zofia? They arrived in Yallourn from Europe post war and both attended Yallourn High School - commencing around 1958.

3 bedroom, weatherboard, high off the ground with timber lattice. Outside dunny for a good number of years until sewerage came. Chip wood heater in bathroom and a Lux stove in the kitchen plus electric range, plus an ice chest as it was John's job to go up the street to get the ice, until electric fridges came in.

My memory of basketball in Yallourn. This was around mid 1940s when we first had the Youth Club basketball teams. The games were played on asphalt courts, which were where the Fire Station and Bus terminal were later built. Our next venue was on the ovals area, right up at the back of the tennis courts, over the road from the swimming pool. There were no facilities, like toilets, change rooms, shelters – oh so primitive in comparison with today’s facilities - still we all enjoyed our sport.
