Wooden house, creosoted 3 bedrooms with another room added. My grandparents - James & Annie Rimmer - also lived there. My grandfather died when I was 6 yo so my grandmother continued living with us until we moved to Newborough when Yallourn was closing down. We had a copper in the laundry which we used to carry hot water for a bath. Later had a chip heater in bathroom. Our house was very comfortable - open fire in loungeroom and also one in the kitchen. Loved living in Yallourn. Immediate Neighbours: Jack & Myrle Moore; Mr & Mrs Huddy; Paice; Brown

Billy cart rides down Coach Road hill, climbing the fire tower at the top of Coach Road, playing on the swings on Coach Road hill and trying to swing over the top. Walks in the bush just up the road. Not many specific memories unfortunately, just very general ones. I remember the Queen coming to town and sitting at the side of the road in the Town Square waving an English flag as she drove by. Jean Hattam wrote: there was great excitement when the Junior School opened after Easter in 1930. We all marched down to our new school – the headmistress was Miss Carol. From ‘bubs’ grade to 4th grade went to the new school and grades 5 & 6 remained at the Higher Elementary School, which later became High School after I left. Schools were closed twice – once for the Polio epidemic (there was a few lost lives) and teachers went around town, putting our school work in the letter boxes.

Jean Hattam wrote: We had to build air raid shelters in our back yards, put up black-out curtains and an Air-raid Warden patrolled the street and would knock on the door if any lights were showing. Coupons for tea, butter, sugar, meat, petrol, clothes etc – we made out alright. They ceased altogether late 1948. Guides were cancelled during WWII as the Guide hall was taken over for Air-Raid Precautions (ARP) – a few Brownies met in the leader’s garage.

Jean Hattam wrote: Dances were held in the Fire Brigade hall and the Army Drill hall - Scotch nights, debutante balls etc and what a grand night was had by young and old. There were pictures held at St John’s Church run by Mr Parry and at St Therese’s by Mr Philips. Around early 1939, the theatre opened – what excitement…ushers in uniforms and so other picture shows ceased.
